Your Style is in the Details

As it is often said, the devil is in the details. Well, I say your style is in the details just as much! Everybody can learn to put together a “correct” outfit, following the advice that fashion magazines and TV shows dole out. It’s easy to create an outfit that will look right and won’t break any fashion rules (more on that here). But it’s a fair guess to say that that outfit also won’t really be imaginative, different or 100% you. So how do you put your mark on your looks? How do you take a regular outfit and make it scream you?

With…

A strong lip

My favorite way to make an outfit mine is by adding a strong lip. I almost always wear lipstick even with an otherwise bare face, and there’s nothing that can make me swoon harder than a fuchsia pink in the summer. Or a deep velvety wine for winter, or a creamy cherry red for well… year round! If you’re into lipstick, it’s a great way to take a simple jeans+ tee+ jacket look from 0 to 100 in a heartbeat.

An interesting pair of shoes

Shoes are another way to add a spark of interest to your outfit. Whether you’re a brogue lover, a heeled sandal fan, a sneakerhead or a bootie afficionado,ย  the shoes you pick can make a bold statement about who you are and how you choose to express yourself. Put on a killer beautiful (and comfortable) pair of shoes and see how easily it transforms your outfit!

A statement accessory

Now if you’ve been on the blog for a while, you know how much I love a good statement piece. And although dainty, layered jewelry is now trendier than chunky necklaces or earrings, I still wear them with a passion. And that’s where the distinction between fashion and style comes into play!

Fashion is trend driven, style comes from your personal choice of those trends. So for me, a masculine watch or an oversized brooch will always be what I reach for in my jewelry box.

Bright pops of colour.

A dash of colour makes every outfit stand out in a sea of neutrals. So whether you enjoy sporting winter’s deep jewel tones, summer’s punchy hues or anything in between, they are sure to get you noticed in the best of ways. And if you’re not feeling like wearing a colourful outfit just yet, maybe try adding some pops with accessories. It can be a pair of emerald chandelier earrings, or an aqua and tan bracelet, or even just the straps on your backpack. The choice is yours!

A quirky or unexpected print

Prints are easily the most noticeable way to make your outfit stand out. But not everyone is comfortable with sporting big prints or a head-to-toe patterned look. So why not dip your toe in the water with printed accessories, like a scarf, or a printed clutch? Or look for blazers and coats with a cool printed lining? They will still be understated enough, but at the same time making a clear style statement.

details are what makes your style

So I guess my final “words of wisdom” are: Whatever outfit you wear, take it and make it yours! Deconstruct a look’s elements and make them work for you, instead of simply letting the clothes take center stage. A simple outfit can let you shine through, as long as it’s not just a Copy+ Paste job. And that can be accomplishedย  even through the tiniest details.
